I'm this many *Holds up 5 fingers*!

The video was insightful. The speaker made several points about how playfulness can help your mind wander and allow you to come up with great ideas. The speaker explained that as we grow older, we become embarrassed to share our ideas. However, these ideas can be our best ideas! The speaker had the audience (adults ranging from 30 and up) to draw the person sitting next to them in a short span of seconds. After the time was up, the audience looked at their portrait and began to apologize to their neighbors. The speaker explained that this reaction was similar to other adults who did the exercise. However, children who did the exercise did not express any apologizes but happily showed their masterpieces to anyone wanting to see them. The speaker continued to explain that we should not be embarrassed with our ideas and to be more playful!

For this exercise, my sister and I decided to create a tent. Celine and I took our twin beds, propped them up and draped sheets across them. We then placed several blankets and pillows underneath our tent. After our tent was all set up, we began to play various patty cake games!! We also talked about princesses and princes. We had a great time!

Senses

Deaf
I lasted about 5 minutes without my sense of hearing. I tried to watch the Titanic and had a hard time reading the caption and viewing the video. While reading the captions, I lost the visual aspects of the video! I also realized that I had to use my imagination to hear the different voices of each character in my head. I am extremely thankful to have all my senses and realized how lucky I am within that short span of the loose of hearing.

As for adding an extra sense, I would like to add the sense of knowing if someone is being dishonest or honest.

Class 6 (Networking at the RAM)

Today we had a networking event at the RAM instead of class. I learned about the various backgrounds of the web designers of Refresh Indy. It was interesting to learn about how they became interested in web design. I also learned how some of the web designers learned how to create web sites. I found out that many did not receive any direct web design education. The web designers I talked to were mainly self taught and learned information from friends.

The event at the RAM was insightful and a benefit to my educational experience.

Class 5

Class five was very interesting! Every class seems to be very unexpected. Today, I was excited to introduce my twin sister to a world in New Media with Beth Lykins! She was pretty excited to learn more about my major and we waited patiently for Beth Lykins to arrive to teach the class.

We sat and waited patiently as the time came for class to start. However, we waited longer than usual for Beth Lykins to get to class. Surprisingly this was part of the lesson she was going to teach the class. The clock read 6:12 p.m., twelve minutes past the start of class and Beth Lykins walked into the classroom. However, her entrance did not come with a vocal greeting. I knew at this point that class would be interesting and Celine was in for a treat!! I waited with curiosity as Beth Lykins sat at the front of the room, logging into the computer, and downloading files to the computer desktop.

The files were sound files of Beth Lykins on her cell phone, introducing the class topic of TIME. What is TIME? The proposed question to the class made me ponder the structure that time gives us. A student expressed time as an obsession. However, I browsed around the room and noticed that most of the class did not have a wrist watch.

What if Round Robin

Round Robin

30. Why do we like music that has structure? (Bradleyemoore)

In my opinion music flows better with structure. We are so used to the structure of song having an intro, chorus, verses and bridge that if we hear anything else it sounds strange.

21. What if I liked seafood? (nitsuj)

You would be able to enjoy this wonderful restaurant in Texas called the Boiling Pot! Yum!

13.What if people randomly broke out in dance and song? ( yenningcomity)

I believe it would be hard to concentrate during class if people were randomly breaking out into dance and song. However, if that was normal then I suppose we would be used to having people break into song during a deep conversation, class, etc.!

29. What if God was one of us? (greenen485blog)

Alanis Morissette would have never came up with the song, What if God Was One of Us.

14. What if I was Batman? (joshuainteractive)

You would have a wicked awesome car, save lots of lives with your knowledge and skills to fight evil.

Class 4

Class 4

During class we watched a few random youtube videos about video games and then talked about the influence on people by playing video games. The class had a lot of deep discussions on the matter and it was interesting to hear the different views that each classmate had on the topic.

Next, we talked about our upcoming project and watched some more inspirational videos. The videos helped stir up some ideas that I can look into for my research project.

So until then... I'll keep looking on the sideways of things to stir up more ideas for my research project!

The Door Frame

Our Seeing Sideways Class was given a door frame assignment last Wednesday. The class had to find something creative to do with the door frame and was given most of the class period to decide. We discussed several ideas such as leaving the door on campus with a phone number, adding a door to the door frame and setting it up in Beth Lykins yard or shipping the door to Beth Lykins home. So, we decided on the last idea and pitched in 5 dollars to get the door shipped. We called UPS to get an estimate and found out that 5 dollars would be plenty of money to ship the door frame. However, Justin found out that the price jumped and we were unable to afford the new amount of a 100 and so dollars. Luckily, Justin lives near Beth Lykins and was able to drop the door frame off with a UPS label. Our plan had some down falls but worked out great!! I also asked Justin to write our names on the door frame with Seeing Sideways Class 2009. The exercise was a great way to get to know our classmates by talking about different ideas. I had fun with the door frame experiment!

Class 3 and "Bible Dipping Assignment"

Class 3

Today's class discussion was very short and sweet. We went over a our assignment (50 What If Questions) and talked about the various ways to look at rules. We discussed how everyone can interrupt rules differently.

Next, we talked about a doorway and what it means to us. Is a doorway an entrance, exit or a divider? We explained the various "sideways" thoughts on the subject and were assigned a class project. The class project was to take a door frame out of the IT building and decide on something to do with it. The class talked about ideas for about 30 minutes and we agreed upon one idea as a whole.

The Art of Looking Sideways ("Bible Dipping")
Quetzalcoatl

According to dictionary.com, Quetzalcoatl is the feathered serpent god of the Aztec and Toltec cultures.

Quetzalcoatl is said to be known in different forms and by different names.
  • Some of these names include the Plumed Serpent or Celestial Dragon (Dragon form).
  • Another common reference is a venus plant and magical waters (plant form, blue waters, and planet).

Class 2

The class began with a series of class projects. I was excited to look at the various ideas that my classmates came up with for the assignment. After viewing the creative assignments, we took a short break. However in order to take the break, we had to take a class chair with us and go outside the classroom. I took my desk and chair downstairs to grab a soda. I received several strange looks as to why I was carrying my desk around. I thought it was a fun and eventful experience! Next, we watched an Art Video by PBS. The video was about a man and his abstract art design.

Off to see sideways,
Aly

Eggnoxious

For my creative egg assignment, I decided to create a splatter painting with eggs and food coloring. I bought a dozen of eggs, a package of food coloring with four colors, and a canvas. I also used some toothpicks to poke holes in each egg and then filled the egg with a color. After poking a small hole in each egg and filling it with a color, I stirred each egg with three toothpicks to allow the color to soak in each egg. Next, I took my materials outside and set a few trash bags down and then set my canvas upside down on the bags. After setting up my canvas, I took each egg and dropped it onto the canvas. I am happy with my result and had a great time creating my painting!

The Egg

Seeing Sideways Class 1

I am very excited about taking this class and venturing into the creative side of New Media. I hope to challenge myself and learn new approaches to thinking creatively.

Today, I found out that our class is like a kindergarten class for college students! My excitement reached a whole new level when hearing this statement. I hope we take naps and play heads up 7 up!!

Our first assignment is to be creative with something simple, an egg. I am going to brainstorm and just let my creative juices flow and hopefully I can come up with something unique! I'm so happy I was able to travel home with such a delicate piece of art and keep it intact until I made it safely home. I am excited to work with this simple egg and transform it into a work of art.
